The name of Marie-Louise Eta has been in the global spotlight all week since Union Berlin announced her appointment. However, Wolfsburg ensured her debut as the first female head coach to manage a match in Europe’s top five leagues ended in disappointment, securing a 1-2 victory.
Expectations were sky-high, and a roar echoed through the picturesque An der Alten Försterei as Eta emerged from the tunnel. Every camera lens focused on her figure, capturing a historic moment. Compared to the last lineup fielded by her predecessor Steffen Baumgart, Eta made several changes to face a Wolfsburg side that had not won in the Bundesliga for over three months and was in the relegation zone. She refreshed both flanks with veterans Trimmel and Rothe, paired Kemlein alongside Rani Khedira in midfield, and brought in Ansah further forward.
This more attacking approach, however, backfired when Wolfsburg took the lead just over 10 minutes into the game. Patrick Wimmer picked up the ball in midfield, drove to the edge of the area, and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner, leaving Ronnow with no chance.
Union Berlin responded well. Grabara made a fine save from Ansah, and Doekhi headed just over the bar from a second-post cross. But they could not maintain the momentum. Shortly after the restart, Pejcinovic scored from outside the box after Eriksen won the ball high up the pitch, dousing the home crowd’s spirits.
As with Wimmer’s opener, Union Berlin recovered quickly and even hit the woodwork through a powerful header from Andrej Ilic. With five minutes left, Oliver Burke ran onto a through ball and finished one-on-one against Grabara to make it 1-2.
They pushed hard for an equalizer until the final whistle, but could not prevent Marie-Louise Eta’s historic debut from ending in defeat. The result leaves Union Berlin just six points above the relegation playoff spot with four games remaining, while Wolfsburg remain in the drop zone but have closed the gap.
